Statement by the President of Socialist International regarding the death of Gough Whitlam

Gough Whitlam, was a leader with vision. He tried to open up and reform the Australian Labour Party, to fight for a multicultural society , to promote gender equality. During his tenure as Prime Minister he initiated major reforms like free higher education and Medicare universal health system ,guaranteeing equal opportunities for all Australian citizens. In foreign policy , he understood ,as early as 1973 ,the need to think globally and establish relations with China. Greek people will always remember his solidarity during the difficult years of the military junta. As every visionary he had to overcome many obstacles, to combat many vested interests , to face injustice. But the importance of his achievements is even more relevant today. The progressive movement will always be inspired by his passion and democratic spirit.
