Statement on the situation in South Ossetia

“I would like to express my serious concern over the violent fighting in South Ossetia (Georgia) and call for the immediate cessation of hostilities by all the parties and the swift resumption of negotiations in order to find a peaceful way out of this crisis.

I deplore the loss of human lives and the suffering inflicted on the civilian population.

In this context, let me also join the United Nations Secretary-General, the United Nations General Assembly and the International Olympic Committee in their calling on all those who are at war to observe the Olympic Truce, a worldwide cessation of hostilities while the Olympic Games are in progress.”
