Statement for the closing of the detention center in Guantanamo Bay.

“As President of the Socialist International I wish to add my voice to the calls for the closing of the detention center in Guantanamo Bay.

We will hinder terrorism only if we, as human beings and societies, do not abandon the very principles we so cherish and seek to preserve.

We must extend to all suspects of terrorist activity the rights and liberties they are being accused of seeking to deprive us from.

Global security is an important priority for the protection of our democratic societies and institutions.

This goal, however, must be promoted with respect for and protection of civil liberties and human rights and the relevant provisions of international law.

Humane treatment of prisoners and the guarantee of fair trial are hard-won achievements that have resulted from the struggles of democratic and progressive forces around the world.

We should protect these achievements in all circumstances.

Our principled stance is in the end the most potent rebuttal to those who use violence and terror to accomplish their political goals.”
