Statement regarding the tension created by the publication of sketches of the Prophet Muhammad

“In our global village we have become more and more interdependent. We need to create understanding, we need to create communication, we need to respect each other, we need to be able to solve difficult disputes through dialogue.

That’s why the Socialist International calls upon the global community and peoples from around the world to do everything they can in order to deal with this dispute in a calm way, in a way of dialogue and understanding.

I myself have fought all my life for the freedom of speech. In my country I have seen in the past the freedom of speech violently repressed. But I also know that freedom of speech brings a very big responsibility. A big responsibility to create the environment of trust, the environment of understanding, and not allow those few who want to block the freedom of dialogue, the freedom of speech through racism, through stereotypes, through prejudices.

We need words that enlighten, not words that incite. And this is a prerequisite if we want to make sure that the environment we live in guarantees the freedom of speech. Our priority must be to create the channels of communication, of trust, of understanding that will allow for a dialogue, a dialogue between different cultures, different peoples, different ethnicities, different religions.

The Socialist International has always fought for freedom and continues to do so. It also fights to build bridges of understanding between peoples. We reaffirm this goal and I reaffirm my fight to accomplish this goal. “
