George A. Papandreou (born June 16, 1952) is Former Prime Minister of Greece, current President of Socialist International, a Member of the Hellenic Parliament and former President of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). He served as the 11th Prime Minister of Greece from October 6, 2009 - November 11, 2011, after PASOK’s victory in the October 2009 national elections.

Socialist International Congress to be held in Athens

The XXIII Congress of the Socialist International, the worldwide organisation of social democratic, labour and socialist parties, will be held in Athens, Greece on Monday 30 June, Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 July, this year.

The Congress, the highest decision-making body of the organisation, will address political priorities and strategies for the period ahead, discussing key issues on the international agenda, including climate change and sustainable development, peace and the resolution of conflicts, the world economy, and migration in today’s global society. The Congress will also admit new members and elect the organisation’s Presidium.

The event, to be hosted by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, Pasok, the Greek member party of the organisation, will gather leaders and delegates from the 159 member parties and organisations of the International from all continents, and representatives from other political parties and organisations participating as guests.
