George A. Papandreou (born June 16, 1952) is Former Prime Minister of Greece, current President of Socialist International, a Member of the Hellenic Parliament and former President of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). He served as the 11th Prime Minister of Greece from October 6, 2009 - November 11, 2011, after PASOK’s victory in the October 2009 national elections.

Papandreou & Pitella from Athens: “Greece needs progressive reforms – not austerity policies” | 22.05.2015

The President of the Movement of Democratic Socialists and President of the Socialist International, George A. Papandreou, met today in Athens with the President  of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella.


Among other issues the two Leaders discussed  the European policies for addressing the crisis, the socialist agenda,  the challenges of the progressive parties in Europe and the need of a broader cooperation against neo-liberalism.

Regarding  Greece, Mr  Papandreou and Mr Pittella, agreed that  it is important that the negotiations with the institutions have a positive outcome. They agreed also, that what Greece needs is progressive reforms and not austerity policies.
