On the Mecca agreement for a Palestinian national unity government

“The Socialist International has always supported a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, based on mutual recognition and existing side by side in peace and security.

The renunciation of violence, the continuation of the peace process launched in Oslo in 1993, and the implementation of the Quartet’s Road Map are the best way forward to overcome the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As President of the Socialist International, I welcome the agreement reached in Mecca on a Palestinian national unity government. I hope that this agreement will curb the violence, creating a better future for the Palestinian people. I appeal to all sides to make constructive efforts to implement this agreement.

This positive step should open the way for the end of the financial embargo. It should become an opportunity for a new beginning of the peace process, supported by the full engagement of all members of the Quartet. The efforts of President Abbas to promote reconciliation, bring violence to an end, and open a dialogue with the Israeli Government must be welcomed and need our further support.

The Socialist International remains committed to working tirelessly to bringing peace to the region and will soon be in contact with the new unity government.”
