Jalal Talabani, Mam Jalal, was a great leader, a man of principles, a true believer in progressive values. Having experienced the challenges of a long and difficult struggle for freedom and dignity he pulled his weight in promoting peace, democracy, dialogue and cooperation. As President of Iraq, he managed – skillfully and with wisdom – the emerging difficulties of a new beginning and historical era of his country.

I remember how he publicly took the position against the death penalty (capital punishment). He had then stated that his stance was inspired by the values of social democracy. During his term as Vice President of the Socialist International he made sure to be present at every meeting, always authoritative, rich with ideas and compassion.

As a friend he was always amongst us, warm and humane. His passing away takes place at a moment his country needed him more than ever. At a time where global progressives needed his crucial voice.

Dear Jalal, we will miss you. Be assured we will continue fighting for our common goals.

I convey my deepest condolences to his wife Hero and his children, the comrades of our member party the PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) and all his friends around the world.
