Statement on Mauritania

I strongly condemn the military overthrow of the government of Mauritania, a government that was elected in a multi-party democratic election in June 2007.

As President of the Socialist International I call for respect for the rule of law and for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Mauritania through dialogue between the political forces.

I wish also to express my full support to the efforts of the African Union for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The Socialist International is going to monitor closely developments in Mauritania in cooperation with our Member Party (Rassemblement des Forces Democratiques (RFD).”
