Statement by the President of S.I. George Papandreou on the death of Nelson Mandela

A freedom fighter who succeeded in abolishing apartheid, Nelson Mandela was and always will be a model for progressives around the world.
Overcoming hardships, persecution, and many long years in prison thanks to an unshakable faith in his ideals, Mandela showed that through individual and collective action there is always hope for those less privileged. As a resistance leader, he tore down the walls of racial discrimination that enslaved the majority of the South African people.

By establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, he tore down the invisible walls of hatred that were built to divide the nation. As leader of the African National Congress Party, a member of the Socialist International, and as President of South Africa, he paved the way for the democratic transformation of his country. As an active member of the Non Aligned Movement, Nelson Mandela envisioned an African continent free from the legacy of colonialism.
His struggles for freedom, democracy, equality, peace, reconciliation, and social justice are also struggles of our Movement.
It is our duty to keep his spirit alive.
