Statement at the PES Leaders meeting

“This is a make-or-break moment for Europe. For those who say that we should not pool our risks in Europe, I would say we already have pooled our risks and by not creating greater confidence in the European structures, in the Eurozone, by not taking bold steps to pool our resources in order to deal with the crisis at hand, we are dividing Europe into the high-risk and low-risk Europe and this division will splinter the European Union, will splinter the Eurozone.

So it is a very dangerous moment, when on the other hand we know, and we progressives know, we social-democrats know, that Europe can and should be a force of good in the world; a force of good for its people and a force of good for the world economy in the globalizing economy, where we need to humanize the globalized economy.

As for Greece, we have lived up and we will continue to live up to our responsibilities. However, Greece is not the problem. Greece may have had a problem and has to make major changes and continue to do so; but now the problem is to solve and complement the architecture of the Eurozone. From the Eurobonds, to a stronger fiscal and economic and political Union, these are the bold steps we must make and must make them immediately.”
