Statement after the tragedy caused by cyclone Nargis in Burma-Myanmar

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of thousands of human lives and the destruction suffered by the people of Burma/Myanmar after cyclone Nargis struck the country.

I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims and my support and solidarity to all those who have lost their homes and properties and who are suffering the consequences of the storm.

Every effort must be made to make sure that assistance is delivered directly to the people most affected by disaster.

I appeal to the authorities to make every effort to cooperate with the international relief organizations, in the interest of the population suffering from this emergency.”
