Meeting of the Socialist International

Declaration by George A. Papandreou following the meeting of the Presidency of International Socialist in Madrid

“Declaration by George A. Papandreou following the meeting of the Presidency of International Socialist in Madrid
“We had the occasion with Prime Minster of Spain Rodriquez Zapatero, to discuss about the anticipated Summit of the European Union. First of all we talked about financial perspectives which are a very important issue for Greece and secondly about further discussions regarding the European Constitution, under a socialist auspice that is as for the Europe of social cohesion and social model that allows for cohesion and competitivity thus the citizen can feel that it expresses himself and that he participates.
We had the occasion to discuss wider issues, such as the question of poverty, inequality on a global level as well as about the debate that will take place within the “Group of 8” regarding the debts of the poorest countries of the world.
Last, we thanked and fare welled the departing President of Socialist International, Antonio Gutterez, who takes charge of the UN’s High Commission for the Refugees and Humanitarian Rights. He is a very capable person. I am certain that he will provide with an first-rate work there and that he will be an outstanding defender of human rights and refugees around the world.”
