George Papandreou in support of women’s rights in Morocco
George Papandreou, President of the Socialist International sent a message of support to the First Secretary of USFP , SI member party in Morocco, for his struggle for women rights. Few weeks ago , during the Congress of the women of USFP , Driss Lachguar adopted a number of important proposals in favor of women rights . Among these proposals is the abolishment of polygamy, the ban of underage marriage and the opening of a dialogue on equality in inheritance.
The adoption of these proposals caused a strong reaction of extremist groups in Morocco resulting in a campaign of threats and insults against Driss Lashguar and the women of the USFP.
Find below the letter of George Papandreou to Driss Lachguar:
I was informed about the recent campaign of slander and threats against yourself and members of your party.
With this letter I wish to convey the solidarity and support of the Socialist International in relation with such acts of hatred that do not respect the basic rights and principles of democracy.
We are convinced, that the actual circumstances will strengthen your determination and the struggle of all democratic citizens in Morocco and will not make you deviate from the key challenges and priorities of the society.
With friendly regards,
President of the Socialist International
