George Papandreou met with President Clinton

The President of Socialist International, George Papandreou, met yesterday with President Bill Clinton.

The meeting occurred during the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual event in New York.

Clinton and Papandreou discussed recent international developments including the progress in Greece, emphasizing the need for sustainable economic development and innovative solutions for global challenges.

Clinton announced that the “Clinton Global Initiative” (CGI) would be hosting a conference in Greece this June (2015) focusing on the Mediterranean region. He highlighted Greece’s substantial financial progress, but noted the challenges Greece faces to finance infrastructure through bonds due to the restrictions arising from the European currency union. Clinton called for a more innovative approach for Greece, as well as for other Mediterranean countries.

He also called attention to Greece’s human capital: casting aside common misconceptions, Clinton stated that the Greek people are very hard workers, they work, for example, 25% more that the Germans. Thus, he argued, people should not be so quick to judge Greece’s predicament; there are deeper causes that led to the crisis. On Sunday, September 21, 2014, George Papandreou participated in the People’s Climate March, alongside thousands of marchers including Kumi Naidoo, the International Executive Director of Greenpeace. Papandreou also took part in the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) conference, which is chaired by Professor J. Sachs under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General.

On Thursday, September 25, 2014, Papandreou will lead the Annual Socialist International Presidium in New York.
