Change for Europe

Message to the Congress of the Conference of European Socialist Youth (ECOSY)

“Dear friends and ECOSY comrades,

The recent financial crisis has highlighted the problems of our global political and economic system. Lack of transparency, lack of democratic control, economy inequality, unequal and unjust distribution of wealth, which has led to unequal distribution of political power, and that in turn has led to poverty, the degradation of our environment, the social polarization in our societies, which often has led to more violence, high unemployment.

We are witnessing a financial and political crisis of a system which did not put people first. In the name of the free market’s invisible hand, we actually had the few and the greedy making huge profits while so many, so many others, have suffered.

This cannot be our future. We need change. Today we need a new and democratic governance of our planet, its resources, its economy, which utilizes to the full our human potential, protects our citizens, empowers our peoples and sustains our natural environment.

Europe can be in the forefront, and our European Socialist Youth must be in the lead. I don’t say this simply as a compliment to the work that you have done, and it has been impressive. But I say this also as a necessity. It is your generation that will be confronting, that confronts today, the most daunting challenges humankind has ever faced.

We socialists, social democrats, progressives from all around the world and all over Europe not only bear the responsibility for a plan for the future, for a sustainable future, but we also have outlined very boldly our priorities for tomorrow.

We have talked about the need for a strong stimulus of our economy, which will help deal with unemployment and strengthen small and medium-sized firms.

We have talked about the need for a redistribution of wealth, rather than simply helping the banks and the bankers.

We have talked about the need to invest in a green economy for a sustainable future.

We have talked about and proposed the need for a strong social welfare system, social cohesion, for our citizens, to protect our citizens, and of course giving power to our people through democratic control of the financial system, of our economy and our society at large.

This is why we need progressive majorities in Europe, in the elections that are upcoming. And this is why ECOSY has been and will be, will go on to be continually a movement of success. Because change for Europe is what we need, and we, and you, can and must offer this change.

Let me therefore thank Giacomo, let me thank Ania, let me thank the outgoing Presidium members, for all the hard work and effort they have put into this movement, effort which has brought out priorities such as Europe of no poverty, or the universal Erasmus, which I wholeheartedly support.

These are proposals, and many others you have made, which truly create the basis for a citizens’ Europe, a democratic Europe, a Europe that puts people first.

I look forward to working with your new leadership, working with the new leadership for the European campaign, the parliamentary elections, but also beyond this, in order that we ensure, make it an absolute reality that there is change in Europe.

All the success to your congress. Thank you.”
