Democracy was the political innovation that liberated citizens from the fear of tyrant, monarch and dogma. It was the collective response of citizens to the natural tendency of the powerful to accumulate and maximize wealth and power. Nowadays, the powerful influence of markets and financial centers poses the same threat to our collective social progress. As the role of citizens in the decision making process gets smaller, democracy appears increasingly at risk.
